Standing Up Against Discrimination and Bullying: How SOPAA Empowers Workers to Protect Their Rights and Careers

Discrimination and bullying in the workplace can have devastating effects on employees, both professionally and personally. That's why SOPAA exists – to help fight for workers who feel that their rights have been violated by their employers.

In a recent case, SOPAA was contacted by a member who felt bullied and discriminated against based on their religious beliefs. Allegations had been made regarding workplace conduct, but our member believed this stemmed from his religious beliefs and that it had turned into a witch hunt.

Despite attempting to raise their concerns and attempts to seek clarification with their line manager and HR, our member was ignored. As a result, they felt that their career progression and ability to learn new skills were being hindered by the discrimination they were facing.

After receiving a disciplinary meeting notice, they contacted SOPAA for assistance.
A case manager was assigned to their case, and they worked together to prepare a response and escalate the matter as a Fair Work Claim for workplace bullying.

Thanks to the support and guidance of their case manager, the member was able to successfully win their case. Our member was extremely grateful for the assistance they received from SOPAA, all misconduct charges were dropped, and the member was granted all their leave entitlements so that they could practise their religious beliefs.

Discrimination and bullying should never be tolerated, and it's essential to take action to protect yourself and your career.

Why is SOPAA different? We believe that real change in the workforce STARTS with empowering officers, not bureaucrats.

If you are a member of SOPAA and suspect you are the victim of discrimination or discrimination please submit a member support ticket on your dashboard, or contact us on (07) 3497 5060 - hotline@sopaa.asn.au
